What is a Domain Name?
A Domain name is the unique name that identifies an Internet site, such as: JoesBigTow.Com. Domain Names always have two or more parts, separated by dots.
The part on the left is the most specific, and the part on the right is the most general.
The part on the right is also known as the Top Level Domain (TLD). TLDs usually signify the type of web site that is represented on the site. For instance, a dot com site (JoesBigToe.com) have traditionally indicated that it was a "commercial" or business site. The dot gov sites (www.ca.gov) are used for government sites in the United States. The dot net web sites have traditionally been for Internet service providers, but that is not necessarily the case anymore. The dot org (www.faithmissionministries.org) sites usually are nonprofit organizational web sites.
When Bet-R-Byte Web Hosting secures a domain name for your company, we first evaluate your potential use for the web presence and then concentrate our efforts of securing the best suited domain name choice for your business.
Please note, that brevity is definitely a plus when a person has to type a domain name into their web browser prior to surfing the web. For instance, Alpha and Omega Credit Counseling Services would be easier for the average client to access if the choice was: www.aaocc.org rather than:
www.alphaandomegacreditcounselingservices.org
Some hosting companies sell you a sub-domain of a domain that they own. Here is an example: chico.com is a single web domain and requires an annual domain registration. But if the owner of chico.com sells a sub-domain off of that domain, for example: www.JoesBigTow.chico.com is not a domain that your business can lay claim to and actually say that you "own". If the hosting company is charging you for domain registration fees on a site such as the one mentioned above, then you are being ripped off.
Bet-R-Byte offers domain purchases as low as $5 per year when it is secured along with one of our hosting plans. Click here to go to our hosting plan order form.
